  • Launch of the Here | Africa Dinner Series

In September 2024, we hosted the inaugural Here | Africa Dinner Series —an evening dedicated to celebrating the remarkable women shaping Africa’s food and agriculture landscape. Against the vibrant backdrop of Nairobi, over 20 women founders came together to share their stories, connect with like-minded entrepeneurs, and enjoy an unforgettable dining experience inspired by the flavors of Africa. The food and agriculture sector is one of the most transformative spaces in Africa today. Women are at the forefront of this change, driving innovation, sustainability, and equity. Yet, their stories are often untold, their networks under-leveraged. The Here | Africa Dinner Series was created to change that—to bring women leaders together in a space that fosters connection, collaboration, and inspiration. At its core, the dinner was about community. It was a chance for these women to step away from the demands of their businesses and connect with others who share their vision of a better food system. Over the course of the evening, guests exchanged ideas, shared challenges, and celebrated successes. From farmers and food producers to tech innovators and restaurateurs, the diversity of perspectives at the table created a vibrant tapestry of possibility. The evening’s menu was a love letter to African cuisine. Every dish was carefully curated to showcase the incredible depth and diversity of the continent’s food heritage. From appetizers inspired by coastal Swahili flavors to main courses highlighting rich, hearty traditions from across West Africa, the meal was a journey through Africa’s culinary landscape. Stories flowed freely, ideas were exchanged, and collaborations were sparked. These conversations highlighted the incredible impact women are making across the food system and the potential that lies in working together. To all the founders who joined us: thank you for your stories, your passion, and your commitment to building a better food system. To everyone reading this: stay tuned for more events, stories, and opportunities to celebrate Africa’s food and agriculture innovators. Here’s to the future—rooted in community, collaboration, and connection.

  • Why I Moved Back to Nigeria—and Why I Stay

I am often asked this question, and I can certainly say that what brought me back is not what keeps me in Nigeria today. I decided to move to Nigeria in 2012, at a time when the country was thriving. The economy was stable, and businesses were flourishing with abundant opportunities. My friends in Nigeria were enjoying significant profits from their ventures while also achieving a work-life balance—something that seemed elusive to me as a business owner in the U.S. My father, who had relocated back to Nigeria after paying his “last child’s” school fees (which was me) in the U.S., strongly encouraged me to move back. I saw relocating as a win-win opportunity: increasing my earning potential, achieving the work-life balance I couldn't find in the U.S., and reconnecting with my Yoruba culture. However, by the time I finally made the move at the end of 2015—after spending two years wrapping up my affairs in the U.S.—the situation in Nigeria had changed drastically. The first year of the Buhari administration brought significant economic challenges, including a major decline in the value of the naira and a slowing economy. I remember arriving and feeling like everyone had misrepresented the reality of Nigeria to me. Now, after nine years, I am still here —yet to see the stability I initially expected and yet to experience the profits I had hoped for. The unpredictability of the economy, inflation, and currency devaluation have all posed significant challenges. However, what keeps me in Nigeria is my unwavering optimism. Despite the uncertainty, I believe that the struggles and efforts of the past years have been purposeful and meaningful. More than anything, it’s my mindset that keeps me here. I committed myself to running a business in Nigeria without fully understanding the challenges ahead, but each day, I grow more confident that I can achieve the goals I set for myself. --- Reach out to Seyi Oyenuga to learn more about his journey and his company, Atman Corp .

  • Hello World, we’re here!

Welcome to our corner of the internet! We’re thrilled to finally say these words and even more excited to share this journey with you. This platform is dedicated to one mission: shining a light on the voices and stories of the people reshaping the food system, starting here in Africa. Food is more than what we eat—it’s connection, culture, and identity. Behind every meal are untold stories of farmers, chefs, entrepreneurs, and innovators who are working tirelessly to make our food system more sustainable, equitable, and delicious. These stories, often overlooked, are the ones we want to tell. Why We’re Here Across Africa, a quiet revolution is happening. People are blending tradition with innovation to rethink how food is grown, prepared, and shared. They are tackling the big challenges: climate change, food insecurity, sustainability, and fair access. Yet, despite their transformative work, their voices often go unheard. We’re here to change that. This blog is for the superfans of food systems—the people who care deeply about what they eat, where it comes from, and how it shapes the world. Whether you’re a farmer, chef, entrepreneur, or simply a curious foodie, this space is for you. Our mission is to amplify the voices of those working tirelessly for a better food future. These changemakers deserve to be seen, celebrated, and supported. Their work isn’t just important for Africa—it’s vital for the entire planet. Stories That Matter Here, you’ll find the real stories of the people behind the food. You’ll meet the farmer combatting climate change with drought-resistant crops, the entrepreneur turning food waste into sustainable products, and the chef rediscovering traditional recipes and sharing them with the world. These aren’t just stories—they’re seeds of inspiration. They show us what’s possible when we rethink how we grow, cook, and share food. A Place for Connection This platform isn’t just about storytelling—it’s about creating connections. The food system touches all of us, and we believe that everyone has a role to play in shaping its future. Whether you’re here to be inspired, to learn, or to find your community, you belong. We want this space to celebrate not only African ingenuity but also the global connections that food fosters. After all, food is universal, even though its expressions are beautifully diverse. Let’s Build Together The food system is complex, but together we can make it better. It starts with listening, learning, and sharing stories that matter. It starts with recognizing the work already being done and supporting those doing it. This is our hello, our invitation for you to join us on this journey. Thank you for being here at the beginning. Let’s build a tastier, fairer, and more sustainable food system—together. Let’s go! 🌱
